Gaspard Monge

Born in 1746 in Beaune, Gaspard Monge was a mathematician and great geometrician. At the age of 17, he entered the Collège de Mézière as a draughtsman.

Because his family wasn't aristocratic, he could only enter the college in a menial position. Nevertheless, while there he developed the bases of descriptive geometry.

He was one of the founders of the Ecole Centrale des Travaux Publics, now the Ecole Polytechnique.

A professor of mathematics and physics, he was appointed Minister of the Marine in 1792. He also introduced developments in weaponry with the publication of "L'art de Fabriquer les Canons".
