Nicolas Rolin

Born in 1830, Nicolas Rolin is an iconic character in Beaune and Burgundy.

He was Chancellor under Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy, and in 1443 he founded the Hospices de Beaune with his wife, Guigone de Salins.

"I, Nicolas Rolin, knight, citizen of Autun, lord of Authume and chancellor of Burgundy, on this day, Sunday August 4th in the year of Our Lord 1443, in the interest of my salvation, desiring to exchange temporal goods for celestial goods, do found, and irrevocably endow, in the town of Beaune, a hospital for the poor sick, with a chapel, in honour of God and his blessed mother…"
